Notice: COVID-19 Guidance for CHA Research Community

The IRB is a federally mandated committee of scientific and non-scientific people who are responsible to review, approve, and monitor biomedical and behavioral research involving humans to protect participants’ rights, safety, and welfare.

Submit electronic documents or email the IRB office at CHAIRBOffice@challiance.org

Based on US Food and Drug AdministrationDepartment of Health and Human Services, and Massachusetts regulations, anyone at CHA who conducts or participates in research involving humans must submit the study for IRB review and receive approval before initiating the research. The IRB must also review and approve the research at least annually to make certain that the research does not expose study participants to unreasonable or unnecessary risk.

The CHA IRB meets monthly, or as needed. In its deliberations, the IRB will use the ethical principles of beneficence, respect for persons, and justice that are established in the Belmont Report to make its determination. With representation from a range of scientific disciplines and from outside the academic community, the IRB gives individualized attention to the numerous and diverse research projects at CHA.

  • IRB Meeting Dates & Deadlines

The CHA IRB typically meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month, or as needed. In general, applications for convened IRB review are due on the 2nd Wednesday of each month prior to the meeting. Please see the table below for the current calendar year deadlines.

The electronic version of the IRB application must be submitted to the CHAIRBOffice@challiance.org by 2pm on the deadline date. The original hard copies, including all appendices and original signature submission forms, are due in the office within five (5) business days of the electronic submission. The submission will not be processed until the original hard copies are received.

    Please send all materials to:

    IRB Office
    1035 Cambridge Street, Suite 26

To ensure on-time delivery of the hard copies, it is recommend that the application be hand-delivered to the IRB office. The application must be signed by the Department Chief and the PI, and must be complete, including submission of all conflict of interest forms, or it will not be reviewed.

Minimal risk studies (exempt, expedited) do not have submission deadlines. These studies are reviewed in the order of receipt. Please also submit these studies to the CHAIRBOffice@challiance.org and send the hard copy originals to the IRB office at the above address.
